Chapter 8

That evening, when the campers convinced the counsellors to let them have a rematch of Capture the Flag instead of the planned game, Jessica got up from the bench we were sitting on and grabbed her crutches.

“Where are you going?” I asked.

“I can’t watch. Let’s do some more reconnaissance.”

It was dusk and I didn’t feel good about the possibility of running into Black Hoodie Guy in the dark. Plus, I was too worn out from my stupid accident to go traipsing through the woods. I was even too tired to explain it to Jessica. I decided to go with her to the nurse’s cabin for now and make an excuse later.

We found Nurse Lund sitting inside the dining hall having tea with the kitchen staff.

“Is it okay if Chu – Charles and I go to your cabin to ice my ankle?” Jessica asked.

“Yes, of course, dear. Good for you, taking such initiative in your own recuperation. I’ll be right with you.”

“No, that’s okay,” Jessica smiled her fake smile. It was convincing. “Charles can help. You finish your tea.”

I nodded and tried to look responsible. Miss Lund looked back and forth between us and smiled a little uncertainly. “Yes, you’ll be fine, won’t you? I’ll be up in a bit.”

“You don’t need to worry about us. We’ll make sure the lights are out and the door is closed tight when we leave.” Jessica always knew what to say.

Miss Lund settled in her chair and waved us away happily.

As soon as we were inside the cabin, Jessica started scheming.

“If you go right now, you could be there and back before it gets totally dark. Take your flashlight, though. Do you have it with you?” she asked, without looking at me. She was studying her watch. “Make sure you’re back in an hour and we can slide in with the hot chocolate crowd. If Nurse Neurotic shows up, should I say you went to the bathroom?” She finally realized I was not synchronizing my watch or searching for my flashlight or putting camouflage paint on my face. I was standing there staring at her.

“What’s with you?” she asked.

“I’m kinda tired. Big day. Near-death experience and all.” I made a goofy face I didn’t feel.

Jessica looked at me for a moment, then shrugged and pulled out the deck of cards the nurse kept in a basket under the window. I helped her get set up at the table with her leg elevated and we started playing double solitaire without talking. I relaxed and forgot about being angry with Jessica and about the two mystery men out in the woods. One seemed to be a pretty suspicious character and the other might be my father. You’d think I would be more frightened about meeting Black Hoodie Guy, but you’d be wrong.

When we were half way through a second game of double solitaire, Jessica started in about Dylan again while I ignored her, concentrating on the game and not responding. But she wouldn’t take the hint.
